Free Standing Patio Heater
Can I Use a Portable Infrared Heater in my Yard?
Whether a free standing heater can be used outside depends on its IP protection class and on how stable the device is when it is set up. VASNER's portable electric heaters are all suitable for heating outdoor areas. The high quality of the infrared heaters and their stability prevent them from tipping over in light gusts of wind. Thanks to the intense short-wave infrared rays and the high wattage of the devices, a cosy warmth is created even on open terraces. Depending on the model, VASNER freestanding heaters have different IP protection ratings. For example, the HeatTower series is best for creating cosy warmth in your backyard on cool and rainy days. With its high protection value of IP65 - neither humid air, nor rain, nor jet water can damage the free standing infrared radiator, which is why it can even be stored outside all year round. The VASNER StandLine series with IP20 is suitable for covered terraces and should be stored indoors in dry conditions.
Which Different Kinds of Infrared Technology can a Free Standing Heater Have?
||UltraStar Low Glare technology
|VASNER stand-up heaters: StandLine 23R, StandLine Mini 15, HeatTower
||VASNER portable heater: HeatTower Mini
|Overall heating time: 10.000 hours
||Overall heating time: 8.000 hours
||85% less light than conventional low glare heaters
Both free standing heaters with carbon infrared technology and UltraStar Low Glare tubes generate short-wave infrared A-rays instead of heating the air like a fan heater or a convector heater. As a result, they provide direct warmth at the push of a button without the need for preheating. Even in windy areas with a lower temperature.
The UltraStar Low Glare tube is able to score with its special light reduction. It emits 85 % less light than other low glare tubes. Meanwhile, the carbon tube is exceptionally durable with an overall heating life of 10,000 hours.
Free-Standing Heater with Auto Switch-Off Function
An Important Feature for Your Safety
An important quality feature of infrared free-standing heater devices is their so-called automatic switch-off function. If you tilt your stand-up heater to the side and hear a "rattling" sound inside, then in most cases this is its automatic switch-off mechanism. This ensures that the portable outdoor space heater switches off for your safety if it should ever tip over. This can prevent heat damage to the device and its surroundings - an important feature for each heater for indoor areas*.
*Note: According to the Ecodesign Directive and EU Regulation (EU) 2015/1188, electric radiant heaters may only be used indoors if they are efficiently controlled with an electronic room temperature control (thermostat) with the function "weekday control" as well as "window open detection" or "adaptive control of the start of heating". Regulation by means of room temperature control is only possible with radiant heaters that do not have a digital control with standby mode and are pure ON/OFF devices. Infrared patio heaters are not suitable for use as a primary heating system.
Freestanding Heater Sizes
Which Format is Suitable for Which Purpose?
Two unit sizes are available in both the VASNER StandLine and the VASNER HeatTower series. If your electric free standing heater is intended for use next to a table, a small radiator is best suited. Because it provides the sheltered leg area with warmth without being blocked by the table top. With its height of 78,5 cm and an output of 1500 watts, the stand-up heater StandLine Mini 15 is perfect for use at a table. An alternative option is VASNER's HeatTower Mini, which provides 1500 watts of warmth without being blocked by the table top, thanks to its size of 89 x 47,5 x 33 cm (H x W x D, base included).
If you would like to place your freestanding heater further away from the table, a larger radiator is recommended. With its trapezoidal base, the VASNER HeatTower fits perfectly into patio corners. The 1,04 m tall portable heater distributes its 2500 watt infrared warmth over a large radius with a beam angle of more than 120°. This exceptionally wide heat distribution is only made possible by the specially designed, innovative triple reflector on the inside of the radiant heater. Therefore, if you take a look into the housing of VASNER's HeatTower, you can always see 3 reflections of the carbon tube in addition to the actual heating element itself. Alternatively, you can buy a VASNER Standline 23R free standing heater. This portable radiator with a heating power of 2300 watts and a height of 99 cm also quickly provides heat from head to toe over an area of up to 30 sqm.
How Much Power Does a Free Standing Heater Consume on Different Heating Levels?
How many watts of energy an electric freestanding heater consumes depends on the chosen brand and model. At VASNER, the following heat settings are available:
HeatTower Portable Outdoor Heater Series
StandLine Freestanding Heater Series

- Less light for a cosy atmosphere
→ Light reduction contributes to greater comfort and less strain on the eyes
→ The HeatTower Mini is equipped with a newly developed UltraStar Low Glare tube, which produces 85% less light than conventional low glare radiators. But VASNER's other free-standing heaters also contribute to a relaxing atmosphere by emitting less light with their carbon tubes.
The Difference Between a Free Standing Heater and an Infrared Wall Heater
There is no generalised opinion as to whether a radiant wall heater or a free-standing heater is better. It always depends on the purpose for which you would like to use the device. An electric wall-mounted unit is suitable if you desire sun-like warmth from above. For example, if you would like an infrared heater mounted above the changing table*. A ceiling or wall-mounted radiant heater can be used as a heat lamp over the changing table to soothe and calm the baby, making it easier for parents to change its diapers. On the terrace or indoors*, a wall heater is particularly suitable if you have a fixed seating area without a table or with a low lounge table. If you have a higher table, you are better off with an electric freestanding heater or a column heater. Since the rays of a vertical, portable heater are emitted from the side, they can reach your legs without the tabletop shielding their heat. Furthermore, you may want to move your furniture around, resulting in the heat being needed elsewhere. In this case, a freestanding heater or an infrared heater mounted on a stand is highly flexible and can easily and quickly be placed wherever it is needed to keep you warm. A wall or ceiling heater, on the other hand, may limit your flexibility.
*Note: Please make sure that only infrared heaters that are explicitly designated for such use are used for changing tables and for babies. The use of devices that are not explicitly designated for this purpose can, in the worst case, lead to unpredictably dangerous situations.
