Multifunctional Device: Converting an Infrared Heating Panel into a Portable Heater

VASNER Presents Different Mobile Heaters

We’ve all been there – you have to do something in a certain room or building you rarely visit, and it’s relatively chilly there. Or you sit at your desk for a long time and your legs are cold – but you don’t want to heat the whole room excessively. In many such cases, you may feel cold and need a little warmth in certain areas. The solution to this problem is obvious: Set up a portable heater where additional warmth is needed.

Options for Creating Mobile Warmth

In cold rooms, such as warehouses, basement hobby rooms or the like, an infrared patio heater can be used very effectively. The special space heaters have an intense heat output and provide ideal warmth even in tough, very cold and draughty conditions. However, these devices are not ideal to be used e.g. under your desk or in tighter office settings. For this purpose, a portable panel heater is much better suited as a freestanding unit.

*Note: According to the Ecodesign Directive and EU Regulation (EU) 2015/1188, electric radiant heaters may only be used indoors if they are efficiently controlled with an electronic room temperature control (thermostat) with the function “weekday control” as well as “window open detection” or “adaptive control of the start of heating”. Regulation by means of room temperature control is only possible with radiant heaters that do not have a digital control with standby mode and are pure ON/OFF devices. Infrared patio heaters are not suitable for use as a primary heating system.

The latter portable electric heater is available with different wattages, e.g. 800 or 1000 watts. The required heating power for your room / workplace depends, among other things, on the:

  • Insulation

  • Number of external walls

  • Size of the area to be heated

  • Usage of the room

Comparison: Portable Panel Heater and Patio Heater

A portable panel heater is not to be confused with an infrared patio heater. What both devices have in common is that they only need to be connected to the power socket for use. However, the intended fields of application are different. Infrared panel heaters are to be used exclusively for enclosed rooms because the long-wave infrared C rays are not wind-resistant. So if you put a mobile heating panel on your terrace, the warmth will immediately dissipate.

In your home, however, the portable electric heater can be used as the main heating system or as an additional heater to provide pleasant, cosy warmth. The energy consumption is comparatively low. A portable heater with a thermostat also simplifies its operation and saves you more money on electricity costs.

In addition to indoor panel heaters for your home, VASNER also produces infrared patio heaters for walls and ceilings as well as freestanding units. For example, the HeatTower stand-up heater with 2500 watts or the Appino 20 model with 2000W. Both devices can be conveniently operated by remote control. The Appino 20 has 6 heating power levels and optional accessories. The portable heaters are not suitable for continuous use in closed rooms, as their heat is very intense. This is accompanied by a higher energy consumption. However, one of the advantages of the mobile electric heaters is that they emit heat immediately after being switched on. In addition, the short-wave A radiation is wind-resistant, so it is suitable for outdoor use. The mobile heaters do not have a warm-up period, as is the case with a portable panel heater.

Why you Shouldn’t Opt for a Fan Heater

Electric fan heaters do not work with infrared rays, but with convection, i.e. heating the air (like a convector heater). This method of heating results in moisture being removed from the room air, making it very dry. To add to that, fan heaters are very noisy compared to portable panel heaters. If a mobile, electric fan heater is placed in an office, for example, the noise disrupts the employees’ ability to concentrate.

If you do a test between electric fan heaters and portable infrared heaters in 2020, you will quickly recognise the winner: infrared heating panels operate silently and provide intense heat without drying out the room air.

Must Infrared Panel Heaters be Permanently Wall Mounted?

Most people are only familiar with electric heaters as permanently installed ceiling or wall-mounted units. This is the most common application and a good method for providing cosy heat evenly throughout the rooms of your home, your bathroom (see the device‘s IP rating) or office. The selection of infrared models is very wide. It ranges from metal panel heaters, glass and picture heaters to hybrid infrared heating panels. VASNER offers several products in different designs for all purposes.

When electric panel heaters are installed on walls and ceilings, they are usually permanently mounted and connected directly to the mains supply of the house, given that the usage of the room is clearly defined. But how can you heat if you would like to use a room flexibly or more sporadically, such as a studio or occasional office space.

The Alternative: Using an Infrared Panel as a Portable Heater

Such rooms are not always worth heating continuously in order to save heating costs, among other things. Furthermore, there are workplaces where the entire space cannot be heated optimally and only the workplaces need to be heated. This can be the case, for example, at service counters in airports and reception points of car rental companies.

A portable panel heater can also be used for this type of room use and targeted heating. A mobile electric heater placed close to your body gives off a great, gentle warmth and prevents you from having cold legs or shivering during work or your hobby, for example. Aimed directly at the individual and the place where they spend their time, the portable heater provides great infrared warmth.

Height-Adjustable Feet Turn the Citara M into a Freestanding, Portable Panel Heater

The feet of the Citara M infrared heating panel, which match the white or black colour of the unit, are quickly and easily screwed onto the threaded holes at the back of the device. Long guide rails on the stands make it possible to slightly adjust the height of the panel heater. This means that the Citara metal heater can be positioned anywhere next to or under your desk to provide intensive heat. Thanks to the built-in mains plug, the electric heater can be plugged in immediately. Optionally, the temperature can be regulated automatically via a plug-in thermostat such as the VASNER VUT or VFTB-AP. Thanks to the feet, the wall and ceiling heating panel can be quickly and easily transformed into a portable heater. Enjoy the great infrared warmth at your workplace, aimed directly at you. No more cold legs!

Stable Stands for the Mobile Hybrid Panel Heater VASNER Konvi

You can also use the Konvi series as a freestanding, portable heater. Thanks to the hybrid infrared technology, the Konvi heats your room even faster and provides targeted radiant warmth. The Konvi electric heaters made by VASNER also have two screw threads in the base of the panels, to which the feet can be attached within minutes. The fact that the Konvi can be removed from the wall bracket and fitted with feet in the blink of an eye makes it a truly versatile heat source. But the icing on the cake is the integrated thermostat, which makes the hybrid infrared heating panel completely self-sufficient as a freestanding, portable heater. The VASNER Konvi is the ideal, mobile heating device, which you can set up flexibly for intense heat anywhere.

Portable Infrared Heating Panel as an Emergency Heater

Thanks to the option of mobile use and the quick supply of heat, a mobile infrared panel heater is also ideal as an emergency heater if your regular heat source fails or cannot be put into operation for other reasons. Quickly set up at the designated location, it provides a pleasant warmth and thus ensures a smooth heat supply. The only prerequisite for the portable heater is an intact power grid.
